Principios clave de la protección equilibrada contra incendios

Existen 3 principios básicos de protección contra incendios en los edificios modernos. La detección temprana y la supresión activa son los dos más conocidos por el público en general y se consideran modos de protección activos o reactivos. Esto significa que el fuego desencadena la respuesta, haciendo que las alarmas de humo o incendio alerten a los ocupantes del edificio, o que los sistemas de rociadores empiecen a inundar la zona afectada con agua para suprimir o extinguir el fuego. La contención se considera una forma pasiva de protección, en la que en la construcción se llevan a cabo prácticas para contener o limitar la propagación del fuego a su punto de origen.

  • Los detectores se utilizan para activar las alarmas de incendio y avisar a los ocupantes del edificio y a los servicios de emergencia.
  • Los rociadores están diseñados para controlar incendios pequeños y medianos y para evitar que el fuego se propague más allá del área típica de diseño de suministro de agua de unos 1.500 pies cuadrados.

Fundamentos de los códigos de edificación

Una gran parte del Código Internacional de la Edificación trata de la prevención de incendios. Se diferencia del Código Internacional de Incendios en que el primero trata de la prevención de incendios en relación con la construcción y el diseño, mientras que el segundo trata de la prevención de incendios en relación con el funcionamiento de un edificio terminado y ocupado.

Por ejemplo, el código de edificación establece criterios sobre el número, tamaño y ubicación de las salidas en el diseño de un edificio, mientras que el código de incendios exige que las salidas de un edificio terminado y ocupado estén desbloqueadas. El código de edificación también aborda el acceso para discapacitados y la estabilidad estructural (incluidos los terremotos). El Código Internacional de la Edificación se aplica a todas las estructuras en las zonas donde se ha adoptado, excepto a las viviendas unifamiliares y bifamiliares (véase el Código Residencial Internacional).

Algunas partes del código hacen referencia a otros códigos, como el Código Internacional de Fontanería, el Código Mecánico Internacional, el Código Eléctrico Nacional y varias normas de la Asociación Nacional de Protección contra Incendios.

Por lo tanto, si un municipio adopta el Código Internacional de la Edificación, también adopta las partes de otros códigos a las que hace referencia el CIB. A menudo, los códigos de fontanería, mecánica y electricidad se adoptan junto con el código de edificación.

En la actualidad, las jurisdicciones de los 50 estados y el Distrito de Columbia han adoptado el IBC.

Es importante recordar que, aunque la adopción del IBC es común en todos los Estados Unidos, siempre es una buena idea confirmar con el AHJ qué código rige un proyecto en particular.
